Chris D Sorensen Art

Each day, chris spends at least an hour or 2 in our workshop in his art corner trying new landscapes, ideas, tools, techniques, paper types, ink and re-painting similar scenes over and over until he perfects them just the way he saw them in his minds eye. I'm in awe of the way he can coax ink and water across the paper to look like storms, waves, a sea of grass, northern lights or the galaxy without making the exact distinction. His ability to tease out space and shadow plays with the mind, and I often imagine myself in a thick fog on a moonlit night trying to make out the exact shape and form of my surroundings. Like a dream and nostalgia all in one. He has a way of capturing the contrast of moonlight on a tin roof and shifting snow in black and white. What a gift. And if being a master of black and white water color isn't impressive enough, he also plays with beeswax and natural pigments in the style of encaustic, bringing landscape to life with vibrant color and movement that changes as the light in the room changes. Encaustics are best enjoyed as originals in person, as the wax carries a depth that doesn't translate well to prints and screen. You can see some of his work currently at Archemides Gallery in Cannon Beach, OR
